DST Dodgeball Rules of Play

All play will be governed by the rules of the American Dodgeball Federation.

PLAY

A. There will be 6 people playing per team during the game.  If both teams have more than 6 players, teams may play with more players as long as each team has an equal number on the court to start each game of each match.

B. A match will consist of a 9 game series. Teams change sides after each game.

C. There will be 4 balls per game if each team starts with 6 players.  If each team has more than 6 players to start a match, 5 balls will be used.

D. To start a game, players will take a position at their back net. After a signal by the official, teams approach the centerline to retrieve the balls.

E. Balls must be taken back half way to the back net before they can be thrown at an opposing player. If the ball is not taken back half way to the back net before it is thrown, the throw will not count.

F. Players then attempt to eliminate members of the opposing team by tagging them with the ball. If a player is hit with any ball that has not yet touched the floor or a net, that player is “out”.

G. Play continues until one team is eliminated. At that point, the referee calls time and the teams will switch sides.

H. The balls are then reset on the centerline and play resumes when the official signals.

I. Each game can last only 8 minutes.  If time runs out, the team with the most players remaining wins the game. If equal players are left, the team to eliminate the next player wins the game.

J. The first team to win a majority of games (five) wins the match.

K. A team must have at least four players to start a match or will forfeit the match (5 games to 0). If a team does not have enough players to start the match or if that team has less than six players, they may have a substitute. No substitutes will be allowed for playoffs.

RULES OF PLAY

A. Uniforms are considered part of a player's body.

B. All balls must be thrown, not kicked. Any ball that touches the floor or net is a dead ball.

C. If a defender catches a “live” thrown ball, the thrower is out and one player then returns to the defenders side in order of first out, first in. If a team has more than 6 players, the substitutes will be the first to reenter the game, with no more than 6 players in a game at one time. If both teams started the match with more than 6 players, a team cannot have more on the court than started the match.

D. If a defender attempts to catch a live ball, but drops it, the defender is out.

E. The defender may block a live ball with another ball. That ball is still a live ball however, until it hits the floor or net.

F. If a blocking ball is dropped as a result of contact from a live ball, then the player who drops the ball is out.

G. A player may block a live ball, then throw the blocking ball down and catch a live ball.

H. A player shall not leave the playing field to avoid being hit or in an attempt to catch a ball.

I. Players may not cross the center line.  If a player does cross the center line, the player is out.

J. Players may not hang on or use any of the nets to gain an advantage. If a player does use the nets, that player will be out.

K. Players who have been called out cannot retrieve stray balls for their teammates, or that ball will be given to the other team.

L. It is illegal for the leading team to control all the balls for more then 6 seconds. A violation will result in the official stopping play and the balls will be divided between the  teams.

M. Headshots, resulting from a high thrown ball, will not be counted.

N. A player hit in the head while ducking or dodging is out, not the thrower.

O. Unsportsmanlike conduct will result in immediate ejection from the game.  Cheating and arguing with umpires is included.

PLAYOFFS

A. The top 4 teams from the regular season will continue to the playoffs.  Seedings for playoffs will be determined by overall records from the regular season.

B. The playoffs will be a single elimination bracket tournament. Seed 1 will play Seed 4 and Seed 2 will play Seed 3. The winners of the semifinal games will advance to play in the Championship.

C. In case of a tie in the regular season standings, the tie breaker will be determined by the following method:

     1)  Head to head record

     2)  If still tied, fewest games lost

     3)  If still tied, most games won

     4)  If still tied, coin flip
